How Granny Jay made her Rosemary Hair Growth Oil

A Journal Entry Found Between Pressed Rosemary Sprigs

The rosemary by the kitchen door has grown taller than the windowsill again.

Oom Hendricks says it thrives because I talk to it.

I say it thrives because I remember to water it.

He insists we are both right.

This morning I noticed young Anna tying a scarf around her hair before walking into the village.

When I asked why, she smiled politely and changed the subject.

Later, her mother confessed that Anna had become worried about her thinning hair after a long winter. She had tried every tonic and remedy she could find, but nothing seemed to leave her hair looking healthy or full of life.

Naturally, I paid Oom Hendricks a visit.

He was already tending to his herbs when I arrived.

“I have another problem for us to solve,” I announced.

He smiled.

“You usually do.”

I picked a sprig of rosemary growing beside his gate.

“What do you know about this?”

Without hesitation he replied,

“Rosemary has been treasured for generations. Gardeners swear by it, herbalists admire it, and every grandmother has a story about it.”

He rubbed the fragrant leaves between his fingers.

“If we’re making a hair oil,” he said, “this is where we begin.”

For days we experimented.

We gently infused fresh rosemary sprigs into golden olive oil, allowing time and patience to draw out the herb’s wonderful aroma.

The oil was beautiful.

Simple.

Honest.

But Granny Jay was never one to stop at “good enough.”

“What if,” she wondered, “we made it even better?”

So they added silky jojoba oil to nourish both the scalp and hair.

Then rich argan oil for softness, shine and manageability.

The result was lighter, more elegant, and left the hair feeling cared for without weighing it down.

As a final touch, Granny Jay tucked a fresh sprig of rosemary into every bottle.

“Why put the rosemary inside?” Oom Hendricks asked.

“So people remember,” she smiled.

“Remember what?”

“That every great recipe begins with a single plant.”

Months later, Anna returned.

She removed her scarf before she reached the gate.

Her hair looked glossy and healthy, catching the afternoon sun as she laughed.

Whether it was the rosemary, the patience, or simply taking time to care for herself, Granny Jay could never be certain.

She simply smiled and handed Oom Hendricks another bottle.

“You know,” he said, holding it up to the light, “Paris may have its perfumes.”

“And the Cape,” replied Granny Jay, “has its gardens.”

She thought that was more than enough.
