Just Opened the Suitcase and Learnt How Granny Jay Got Her Name
Among the treasures tucked away in Granny's old suitcase was a story I had never heard before—a story about her name.
Her real name was Jacqueline.
But in the village where she spent part of her life, people struggled to pronounce it. They tried. They really did. Yet "Jacqueline" seemed determined to twist itself into something else every time it passed from one mouth to another.
Some called her "Madam Jay."
Others, trying to be respectful, stretched it into "Jay Queen."
No matter how many times she repeated her name, the village settled on its own version.
Over time, the formal "Madam Jay" softened, shortened, and became simply "Granny Jay."
And that is how she became known to everyone who loved her.
It's funny how names travel. We are given one name at birth, but life often gifts us another. Sometimes it comes from family, sometimes from friends, and sometimes from a village that simply cannot pronounce Jacqueline.
What began as a misunderstanding became a badge of affection.
Today, hardly anyone remembers the struggle with "Jacqueline." What remains is Granny Jay—a name filled with warmth, laughter, stories, and memories.
So, what's in a name?
Perhaps not just letters and sounds. Perhaps a name is a collection of people, places, and moments. Perhaps it is the story others tell about us when they remember us.
And sometimes, hidden inside an old suitcase, you discover that the name you've always known carries a story of its own.
Will explore Names and Botanicals at a later stage ...
This is Granny Jay
