Just Opened the Suitcase and Found the Heart of the Cape

One afternoon, Granny Jay returned from the mountains with a basket full of leaves, flowers, stems and seeds.

Oom Hendricks laughed when he saw her.

"You haven't brought me a plant today," he said.

"What have I brought then?" she asked.

"The Cape itself."

He spread the collection across the table.

Proteas. Restios. Ericas. Aromatic shrubs and flowering stems.

Together they formed part of a remarkable natural kingdom known as Fynbos.

Oom Hendricks explained that Fynbos is found almost nowhere else on Earth. Thousands of plant species grow within this unique landscape, many existing only in small corners of the Western Cape.

Granny Jay listened carefully.

"So every walk through these mountains is like walking through a living library?"

A single Protea flower, cherished by Granny Jay and symbolically woven into a legacy, held delicately as a testament to shared love and inspiration.

The old botanist smiled.

"Exactly."

From that day, Granny Jay looked at the landscape differently. What appeared wild and untamed was actually a community of plants, each with its own story, purpose and place.

Today, when we draw inspiration from Fynbos, we honor one of the world's most extraordinary botanical treasures.

The mountains are not simply covered in plants.

They are covered in stories.
