Granny Jay noticed the scent before she noticed the plant.
A soft rose-like fragrance drifted across the mountain path, carried on the afternoon breeze.
Following the scent, she found a cluster of delicate leaves and gathered a few to take home.
As always, she sought the opinion of Oom Hendricks.
The botanist crushed a leaf between his fingers and smiled immediately.
"Wild Geranium," he declared.
Granny Jay breathed in the fragrance.
"It smells like a garden hidden in the mountains."
Oom Hendricks explained that the Cape's scented geraniums have long been treasured for their fragrant leaves. Their oils became prized around the world for perfumes, soaps, and wellness preparations.
"What makes it so special?" Granny Jay asked.
"The scent," he replied. "It has a way of making people stop and smile."
Granny Jay understood exactly what he meant.
Years later, whenever the fragrance of geranium filled a room, she would remember that mountain breeze and the hidden patch of plants she almost walked past.
Today, we use geranium not only for its beautiful aroma, but for the memories it evokes—fresh air, mountain paths, and moments of simple joy.
Some plants announce themselves with colour.
Geranium introduces itself with fragrance.
